The Citadel of Cizre is located in the small town of the same name which had a 2013 population of about 110,000.[i] Cizre is in the southeast portion of Turkey's Anatolia region, very close to the Syrian border.

An excavation of the Citadel of Cizre was begun in June of 2013 with a 35 person team of archaeologists from the Mardin Museum and sponsorship from the Governorship of Cizre and the Turkish Ministry of Culture. It is believed that the citadel dates to around the 11-15th centuries AD. The castle area is where the most significant archeological findings have been discovered.[ii]
