The Kurdish Textile Museum is located in one of the historic homes inside the Hawler Citadel in the center of Erbil

Hundreds of colorful kilim -- Kurdish tapestries -- are presented to visitors of the Kurdish Textile Museum.The largely agrarian Kurdish tribes have created these weavings for centuries for a variety of functional purposes.However, events in the last 100 years have nearly destroyed the art

 


 

The museum's primary purpose is to preserve the traditional Kurdish textile arts and educate the public about the important role weaving has played in the culture and history of Kurdistan.The museum follows the code of ethics of the International Council of Museums -- essentially meaning it is a non-profit, permanent public institution aimed at sharing and educating people about the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment



The Kurdish Textile Museum in Erbil has various hours according to the time of year. From October to April, the museum is open from 9:00-17:30 every day. From May to September, the museum is open 9:00-19:00 every day except Fridays. Admission is free.
