The Khanzad castle is on the Erbil-Shaqlawa road about 15 km outside the city of Erbil. 

 

The Khanzad Castle dates back to the Soran Principality period, a time when Kurdistan was ruled by several governing principalities.[i]

The castle is made of stone in a square shaped plan with turrets on each corner. It has been recently renovated.[ii]
