The museum is located on Bekhud Street in Sulaimani.

The Red Security Prison is thus called due to the reddish color of the stucco mud used as the building material. The building was first erected in 1979 under the Ba'ath regime as a torture prison during the Anfal campaign for alleged Kurdish radicals during the uprising.[i] In 1991, the building was converted to a museum to showcase the horrors of the mistreatments during that time.[ii]
